Learn to dress yourself in kimono, step by step
Kimono dressing can feel complicated at first. There are unfamiliar garments, many small accessories and a particular order in which everything is worn.
In this beginner course, we go through the complete process together—from preparing the undergarments to dressing in kimono and tying the obi. Each lesson builds on the previous one, giving you enough time to practise, repeat and become more confident.
The aim is not simply to memorise a sequence. I want you to understand what you are doing, why each step matters and how to adjust the dressing to your own body.
No previous experience is necessary.

During the course, you will learn how to prepare your body and clothing, dress yourself neatly and create a balanced silhouette.
Theory
Kimono dressing is not only about following physical steps. Understanding the garments and their relationship to one another makes dressing much easier.
A complete introduction to wearing kimono
The course combines practical dressing skills with the basic knowledge you need to choose, prepare and wear kimono independently.
You will begin with yukata and simpler obi styles before moving on to casual kimono, juban and Nagoya obi. The lessons follow a clear progression, so you are not expected to learn everything at once.
There is time during every session for repetition, individual questions and corrections.
Understanding what kimono is before learning how to wear it
This first session introduces kimono as clothing, culture, and practice.
Before we begin dressing, we take time to understand the basic structure, items, seasonal feeling, and the quiet mindset behind wearing kimono.
Learning the simplest form of self-dressing through yukata.
Casual obi tying, balance, comfort, and easy corrections.
Nagajuban, collar shape, eri-shin, padding, neckline, and creating a clean kimono silhouette.
Wearing komon or tsumugi by yourself, including ohashori, hemline, collar, and overall balance.
Learning the basic structure and flow of otaiko musubi.
Refining otaiko, obiage, obijime, proportions, and small corrections.
Full dressing from start to finish, personal corrections, photos, and next practice advice.
Learning at Your Own Pace
Everyone learns kimono dressing differently. Some movements may feel natural immediately, while others require more repetition.
The course is therefore taught privately or in a very small group. This allows me to observe your dressing closely and explain how each step can be adapted to your body, mobility and previous experience.
You will not be expected to dress perfectly after one lesson. Confidence develops through understanding and repetition.
In-Person Lessons in Neuss
The in-person course takes place in Neuss, close to Düsseldorf.
For the duration of the course, the rental of a kimono, obi and the necessary dressing accessories is included. This means that you can begin learning even if you do not yet own a complete kimono set.
You are also welcome to bring your own kimono. We can check together whether all the necessary items are available and whether the size and combination are suitable for the course.
Online Course
The beginner course can also be taken online.
For online lessons, you will need your own kimono set, enough space to dress in front of the camera and a device positioned so that I can see your full body.
The sessions are recorded, allowing you to rewatch the explanations and practise each step again at your own pace between lessons.
Before the first session, we can check your kimono and accessories together to make sure that you have everything you need.
